FAQ

Common
questions

The VAT questions UK sole traders and small companies actually type into Google. General information, not tax advice.

  • Q1

How do I calculate VAT backwards from a gross price?

Divide the gross amount by 1.2 for the 20% rate (or 1.05 for the 5% rate) to get the net; the difference is the VAT. £120 gross ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so £20 VAT. The common mistake is deducting 20% of the gross — £120 − 20% gives £96, which is wrong.

  • Q2

What are the current UK VAT rates?

Standard rate 20% (most goods and services), reduced rate 5% (domestic energy, children's car seats, some renovations), zero rate 0% (most food, books, children's clothes). Zero-rated is not the same as exempt — zero-rated sales still count as taxable turnover and go on your VAT return.

  • Q3

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling twelve-month period — not your accounting year. Many businesses register voluntarily below the threshold to reclaim input VAT, especially when most customers are VAT-registered themselves.

  • Q4

Do I show VAT on my invoices?

If you're VAT-registered, yes — the net amount, the VAT rate and amount per line, your VAT number, and the tax point date are all required on a full VAT invoice. Our free UK invoice maker handles every rate, reverse charge included.
