Do I actually need an llms.txt file?
Need is too strong — nothing penalises a site without one. It's twenty minutes of optionality: near-zero cost now, immediate value for the AI agents and tools that already fetch it, and a head start if the big engines adopt it. Do it after your pages are worth mapping, not instead of making them so.

Where do I upload the file?
At your site root, so it resolves at yourdomain.com/llms.txt — the same convention as robots.txt. Subfolders don't work; tools look in exactly one place. It's served as plain text, so any host that can serve a static file can serve this.

Does Google read llms.txt?
No — Google has said Search and AI Overviews don't use it, and Googlers have compared it to the old keywords meta tag. What reads it today is the long tail: agent frameworks, AI browsers and research tools. Write it for those readers and treat any engine adoption as a bonus.

What's the difference from a sitemap?
A sitemap is exhaustive and for crawlers — every URL, no opinions. llms.txt is selective and for language models — your best pages, each with a one-line description of what a reader gets. Keep both; they do different jobs.
